Side Effects, a card game

In News, Uncategorized on January 16, 2017 at 9:43 pm

I’ve always loved making games. When I was a child, my friends and I would get together to invent new games made of cardboard and paint and markers and anything else we could get our hands on. I even remember getting boardgames from the thrift store and repurposing them—gluing paper over the board or using their pieces to make new, more interesting games.

I even had a brief stint writing and designing computer games with HyperCard. My Dad and I would do them together and then upload them to an indie game AOL forum—people under 25 will have no idea what any of those things are.

But I never did anything with my homemade games on a grand scale like I’m doing now.

Last year, I started developing a card game that involved mental illnesses and drugs. The game took many months of tweaking and refining until now we finally have a very fun, darkly humorous, and vindictive game that I’m now calling Side Effects.

I brought my prototype (3×5 index cards with clip art glued to them) to my friend Lee‘s apartment to play with a bunch of people and see if they had any feedback. The illustrator Ben Bronstein was there and he liked the game so much that he offered to help me refine it and do the artwork. I had seen Ben’s unique brand of line art a la R. Crumb back in the day and was overjoyed that he’d help me bring Side Effects to life.

Over the next several months, we worked together, developing a style and template for the cards. We went through many, many revisions and I’m so freaking excited to share the final product.

Here are just a few examples of the cards.

We plan on launching a Kickstarter sometime early this year.

If you live in the New York City area, send me a message and I will be more than happy to meet up and play a few rounds with you. It’s a great bar or coffee shop game!

Falling Up

In News on June 28, 2014 at 7:31 pm

I recently met with the director Joel Schumacher as part of my prize package for winning the Fresh Voices screenplay competition. They published my thoughts on the experience here.

Needless to say, I had an incredible time just sitting and chatting with this awesomely accomplished writer/director/designer. My top three favorite movies of his:

1. Falling Down
2. Lost Boys
3. Flatliners

Here is us together. I am the one grinning like an idiot.

He was genuinely interested in my thoughts, life story, and career path. We ended up talking for almost 2 hours. His advice was solid. It was awesome. Thanks, Joel.

I’m really happy to be signed to Gleichklang Recordings. With some help from my music manager, Lee Cahill, we worked out a fantastic contract and I’m very excited to be a part of Johann Pätzold’s new label.

My EP will be released in August—tentatively titled The Drawing Board. With cover art by Kate McCormack.

In November, Gleichklang plans to release a double album of my music entitled CONDUCTOR (parts I & II).

I’ll be heading to Rostock, Germany in August for the EP release in August.

I’m in a Christian Death Metal Music Video for Some Reason

In News, Things that happened on November 29, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Over the summer I received an invitation to act in a music video for the band The Devil Wears Prada. This is it. The song is called Mammoth.

Despite being stuck in a coffin, the whole experience was awesome. Acting isn’t a primary focus in my career, but I really enjoy doing it and jump at any opportunity.

I get to act regularly now because of Little Orphan Laboratory and the return of The Kat Thek Radio Hour. Doing characters like Oswald Porter and Jimmy Jeans just makes me the happiest boy in school.

If you haven’t already, please check out my show Little Orphan Laboratory. The first episode premieres on November 30th, 2012.

Thanks everyone who helped make this happen.

For those who haven’t heard, The Kat Thek Radio Hour is an amazingly charming, hilarious, and weird variety radio show. We are one of the few people actually doing radio plays. Check it out.
